Short version: OnionSkin only looks at the tab you point it at. Your sheets stay on your machine. If you buy the folio, a licence check talks to a payment provider — that carries a licence key, not your design sheets.
Who we are
OnionSkin is a Chrome extension and related website operated by BryteLabs and Nestamedia Studios (“we”, “us”). This policy covers the extension, the OnionSkin website, and the paid folio features.

What OnionSkin does
When you click to trace a page, OnionSkin reads design values from that tab — colours, type, spacing, hover states, and similar — and can save the result as a sheet on your device. You can also export a sheet (for example as Markdown or JSON) or send it to an AI tool yourself.
What we collect
We do not collect your browsing history
The extension only gets access to the active tab when you use it. It does not run in the background across the rest of your browsing, and it does not upload the pages you visit.
Sheets stay on your device
Traced sheets are stored in Chrome storage on your machine (and, where Chrome sync applies to that storage, according to your Chrome account settings). We do not host a cloud library of your sheets.
Config files you choose to check
If you use “trace over your own code”, files you select are read in the page to compare against a sheet. They are not uploaded to us. Treat them as local processing only.
When you buy the folio
Purchases are handled by our payment/licence provider (Polar). We (and they) process what is needed to take payment and validate a licence key — typically things like a key, purchase status, and related billing metadata. That check does not include the contents of your design sheets.
Website
The marketing site may receive standard server or analytics logs (for example IP address, pages viewed, browser type) depending on how it is hosted. We do not use the website to collect the contents of sheets you create in the extension.
Permissions the extension asks for
OnionSkin requests a short list of Chrome permissions:
- activeTab — access the tab you choose when you run a trace
- scripting — run the tracer in that tab
- storage — save settings and sheets locally
- unlimitedStorage — allow larger local libraries of sheets
It does not request broad “all websites” access.
What you send elsewhere
If you paste a sheet into Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, or another tool, or export a file and upload it somewhere, that transfer is under that tool’s terms and privacy policy — not ours. Only send what you are happy to share.
How long we keep things
- Sheets: until you delete them or clear extension / browser data
- Licence validation: as needed to confirm an active purchase
- Website logs: according to our host’s normal retention
Your choices
- Don’t click trace — nothing runs on the page
- Delete sheets from the folio / library, or remove the extension
- For purchase or licence questions, contact us at the email above
If you are in the UK or EEA and want to exercise privacy rights (access, deletion, and so on) about data we hold about you, email us and we will help where it applies.
Children
OnionSkin is aimed at people building products and interfaces. It is not directed at children under 16.
Changes
We may update this policy as the product changes. The “Last updated” date at the top will change when we do. Continued use after an update means you accept the revised policy.
